As title apparel sponsor to the Springbok rugby team in the 1999 Rugby World Cup, Nike South Africa chose to commission a limited edition box to house its tough new dri-fit breathable original player's jersey, for a select few willing to pay for the real thing.
With production budget constraints in mind, the final solution employed a clever use of one piece of corrugated board, silkscreened, and designed to fold back as a display unit on counter tops, as well as being an all-in-one carry case with tough looking armor plating, achieved by bolting on pre-cut lengths of thin cabling as handles.
The final folded 'breast plates' were held together by a small spring, delivering a functional finish as well as a memorable pun for this 'spring' box. Clever thinking delivers toughness and economy for a premium sports partnership.
